Red-Rock Country Alternative to Moab, Utah

Gateway Canyons Resort, Colorado

The massive Palisade red-rock formation towers over the isolated Gateway Canyons Resort in western Colorado. The resort is a base camp for active vacationers who want to go hiking or mountain biking on trails in the red-rock canyons, fly fishing in mountain streams, rappelling or climbing the canyon walls, or tubing and kayaking on the Delores River.

The adobe-style buildings at Gateway Canyons Resort, created by the founder of the Discovery Channel, fit right into the landscape. It's in the middle of the Unaweep-Tabeguache Scenic and Historic Byway, which is carved through high canyons, follows deep river beds and passes sheer sandstone cliffs.

The resort is about 1 1/2 hours over a pass from Moab, Utah, but so much quieter.
