"Where The Sky Is Born" UNESCO World Heritage Site Near Cancun, Mexico

Boating in Sian Ka'an

Sian Ka'an is a Mayan phrase for "Where The Sky Is Born."? It's easy to see how the name was chosen when you're exploring this UNESCO Heritage site, which is Mexico's first established Biosphere Reserve. In this Reserve near Cancun, Mexico, you can boat and swim through ancient Mayan waterways, see crocodiles in the lagoons, and discover a birder's paradise. Sian Ka'an is a beautiful counterpoint to all the action in the Riviera Maya and Cancun resorts.

Indiana Jones Adventure Trips

"The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull" movie starring the brash adventurer Indiana Jones opened May 22, and lots of tour operators are offering trips that follow Indy Jones footsteps, or let you have similar experiences (without being chased by the bad guys). Would you like to try river rafting in the Southwest, visit the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, fly over Egypt's pyramids or ride an elephant in Thailand?

These trips will take you to several countries visited by Indiana Jones in the many movies featuring his exploits. Several are repeated often well into 2009.

Indiana Jones in Petra, Jordan, in the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade movie(c) Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All rights reserved. Used with permission
Expedia has teamed up with G.A.P. Adventures to create ten trips inspired by the Indiana Jones movies. While you won't have to fight off the bad guys, you will be able explore some of the locales seen in the Indiana Jones movies. The "Pathway to the Mayan Ruins" trip, for example, includes visits to Chichen Itza and ceynotes, underground caves similar to the ones visited in the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Other trips go to Peru, India, China, Egypt, Petra in Jordan, Italy, Nepal and the southwestern U.S.
Trekking in PeruDennis Coello
Trek through the needle-steep Andes mountains on terrain just like Indy did, but you'll have comfortable lodging at night. The trip includes stops along the way to Machu Picchu, so you can explore archeological sites and villages where locals farm as the Incas did centuries ago. There are only three of these 11-day trips offered by Austen-Lehman Adventures, all in the late summer and early fall.
Riding an elephant in ThailandIntrepid Photography Competition 2007, Bathtime, Thailand - Wendy Broekx
During this 8-day trip you'll live in local guesthouses for 7 nights, bike around the Hill Country and ride an elephant. This trip is truly for adventurous travelers. The cost for the 8-day trip (airfare not included) is $555 plus 4,250 baht (approximately $120) paid directly to locals. It’s not a misprint – you’re traveling at grassroots level.
Abu Simbel in EgyptInternational Expeditions
Get a bird’s eye view of the Egyptian landscape on International Expedition’s new Wings Over the Nile program. Travelers fly in a privately chartered plane, so there’s more time to explore sites such as Petra in Jordan and the pyramids in Egypt, with the private guides. The trip includes stops in Cairo, a cruise down the Nile, a visit to Luxor’s Valley of the Kings and the Dead Sea.
Friedland
Explore the same terrain Indiana Jones races through in his new movie, "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" but with considerably more comfort. International Travel Management, which specializes in personalizing luxurious and adventurous trips, suggests blending an adrenalin-packed whitewater rafting excursion on the wilder sections of the Rio Grande, with hiking, biking or horseback riding. Lodging would be at the Encantado Resort near Santa Fe, New Mexico.
