A steady stream of people came up the gondola to hike on the trails weaving around the ski mountain towering above Telluride, Colorado, and the U. S. Forest Service lands beyond. Many were in groups, but I was hiking solo.
I chose a trail that's popular, but during my walk I saw only one other group. I heard no human voices, just the rustling of the aspen leaves as the wind blew through the trees, the chattering of squirrels and? the symphony of cicadas.
Wonderful sounds, but it did make me think carefully about what I need to bring with me,? in case the temperature drops dramatically, rain brings lightening, or I get hurt or lost. Here are tips for day hiking in the mountains, so you'll have a great time but be prepared for the unexpected.
